Norfolk Naval Base is the world's largest Naval Station occupying about 3,400 acres of Hampton Roads real estate in a peninsula known as Sewell's Point. There are as many as 78 ships and 133 aircraft home ported here including submarines, cruisers, destroyers, frigates, amphibious assault ships, aircraft carriers and one of the Navy's busiest airfields.
Douglass MacArthur Memorial is located MacArthur Square in the revitalized downtown area. Artifacts are on in display in nine permanent galleries housed in what is described as one of Virginia's best remaining classical revival buildings. Originally, the building served as Norfolk's City Hall from 1850 to 1918.
The Military Tattoo Show (a military drum or bugle call to quarters at night) is a non-stop, high energy, two-hour extravaganza of music, ceremony and entertainment in the tradition of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Nova Scotia International Tattoo. The show is one of the signature events during the Virginia Waterfront International Arts Festival and is always held in conjunction with the Azalea Festival.
Norfolk Botanical Gardens is a 155-acre display with one of the largest collections of azaleas, camellias, roses and rhododendrons on the East Coast. The Gardens are the hosts for the annual International Azalea Festival. Among the festivities, there are gaily-decorated floats, marching bands, and more that culminate in the coronation of the Azalea Festival Queen.
