Fallingwater is Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural masterpiece, a house built directly over a mountain waterfall in the late 1930’s for Pittsburgh department store owner Edgar J. Kaufman. It is considered one of the most important examples of modern architecture today. Wright is known for his innovative designs. One such design was a “floating” base like the one in the Imperial Hotel in Japan , which withstood the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923. Wright’s own words explain his accomplishments the best: “Architecture is the triumph of human imagination over materials, methods, and men.”

The Laurel Highlands encompasses a three-county area in the Allegheny foothills of southwest Pennsylvania . The region once hid the exclusive resorts of wealthy Pittsburgh Industrialists. Now it offers white water rafting, cross-country skiing, and a photographer’s haven for the region’s wildflowers.
Built in the 1950s, Kentuck Knob is one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s creations that stands out for its integrity in design and setting. The house is constructed of native stone, tidewater cypress and copper. It was designed and built for Isaac Newton Hagan, a dairy business owner from Uniontown , Pennsylvania . The Sonia design is based on simplicity, using a single, compact floor plan with no attic or basement. It has radiant heat in the concrete floors, a “workspace” rather than a kitchen, living and dining rooms distinct from the bedrooms, and a carport rather than a garage. It is definitely a unique structure worth visiting.
