During the sixties, renovators and artists began to restore charming old homes and buildings.

At least to million people visit St. Joseph’s Oratory every year—a place where people go for individual prayer and reflection. Brother Andre’ founded the original chapel in 1904 with just that purpose in mind. In 1917, it was enlarged to handle more people and then the basilica was completed in 1967.
Champlain named Ste. Helene Island in 1611 for his 12 year old wife. The French used the island as a mustering point for their raids on the Iroquois. Then, in 1700, the island became private property and the owner built a manorial house on the island. It is beautiful and full history.
