Ocean City was established as a Christian seaside resort in 1879. From the 1880s to 1900s, the Methodists would rent tents every summer to hold their camp meetings. Eventually, the tents were replaced by wooden cottages and then with more fashionable boarding houses, which later became B&Bs. The seaside resort blossomed from Christian resort to popular family resort with the influx of visitors arriving by ferry and trolley.
