Did you know there are actually over 1,800 islands (1,864 to be exact) that make up the 1000 Islands region? To become an official part of the count, an island must meet two criteria: it must be above water 365 days a year and it must support two living trees. The islands are unique, offering a wonderful recreation experience that spans two nations. Each island has its own individuality with features such as stately granite cliffs, soft sandy bays, tall dark pines and vibrant maple trees—it’s a sightseer’s paradise. Many islands are privately owned but ample public access can be found at island parks and villages throughout the region.
Boldt Castle was built at the turn of the century by multi-millionaire George C. Boldt for his wife, Louise, as a testimony of love for his wife. Mr. Boldt came to America in the 1860's from Prussia, the son of poor parents. A man of tremendous industry, with daring and imagination, he became the most successful hotel magnate in America . He invested over $2.5 million to build this replica of a Rhineland castle, bringing in the finest of artists and the most skilled craftsmen for this project. He planned on presenting it to his wife on Valentine's Day but in January of 1904 Louise Boldt died, ending the dreams of a lifetime. Heartbroken, Boldt telegrammed his construction crews ordering that all work be stopped immediately.
Antique Boat Museum is situated on a peninsula overlooking the beautiful St. Lawrence Seaway . The Museum's collection grew from a concern that the traditional ways of life along the St. Lawrence River , on both sides of the border, were disappearing.
