Portland is the kind of town where you feel like you know everybody. It is a simple city with a beautiful paradox. It is sophisticated with an art scene, fine cuisine, and lots of history yet simple with a zone of industry and pleasant comforts. The historic Old Port Exchange, near the harbor, is full of 19th century red brick buildings, which are home to specialty shops, restaurants and pubs.
Portland Head Light in the Town of Cape Elizabeth was first lit on January 10, 1791. It is a beautiful site to see nestled on the rocks over the water. It is one of the oldest continuously operating lights in the country.
The Wedding Cake House in Kennebunkport is one of the most photographed houses in the United States. It is a Federal style brick house built in 1826 by a local shipbuilder. In 1852, after a fire destroyed an attached barn, he added Gothic frills to the exterior with carved buttresses, spires and lacy spandrels.
Gloucester is America ’s oldest seaport and the birthplace of the country’s commercial fishing industry. It is also where the movie The Perfect Storm was made about six fishermen from town who were on a quest for swordfish when they got caught in the throws of a three-in-one, once a century “perfect storm.”
Rockport is one the country’s oldest artist colonies. It’s no wonder because of the uncommonly magical light at sundown and the many seaside landscapes to paint, like the coastal shack known as Motif #1.
