Nova Scotia is Latin for "New Scotland”. It was given this name by the Scots, who were the first British settlers to go there. In summer it has the warmest ocean water north of the Carolinas. It is the most populous of the Maritime provinces, and is mainly covered with forests and lakes with most larger towns along the seacoast.
Because the harbor extends inland sixteen miles, Halifax was one of the first English settlements in Canada. Founded in 1749, Edward Cornwallis recognized the harbor as one of the world’s great natural harbors. It was here actually that the maiden voyage of the Titanic ended. Many of the unclaimed victims are buried with black granite headstones in the city’s cemeteries.
Peggy’s Cove is a unique, rugged fishing community clustered around a narrow ocean inlet. The lighthouse is perched high up on a huge, sea-washed boulder and now serves as the only Post Office in a lighthouse in Canada .
At the Grand Pre' National Historic Site, a stone church stands as a memorial to the Acadians and houses an exhibit on the deportation of these peoples, who were banished by the English. They eventually settled along the seacoast as far south as New Orleans , where they became known as Cajuns.
Campobello is one of the only internationally managed parks. It combines the United States and Canada in a unique alliance. This island was one of three awarded to Canada in the Aroostook War as a settlement of a border dispute.
Mount Desert Island is a glacier-formed island off the coast of Maine. A large part of the island is Acadia National Park , 40,000 acres of granite-domed mountains, woodlands, lakes and ponds. It is a haven for wildlife and plants.
The CAT ferry crosses the Gulf of Maine from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth twice daily. It travels at the highway speed of 55 mph allowing a crossing time of only three hours. It holds 900 passengers, has a Café and Bar, a casino, duty-free shop and a TV-Movie Lounge.
