Day 1

Mackinac Island in the Straits of Mackinac, between Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas, is certain to take you back in time. Autos may have made Michigan's fortune, but they're banned from this island--horse-drawn carriages, saddle horses, bicycles and walking are the only means of transportation. It was the Victorians who made Mackinac Island one of the nation's most favored summer resorts. In the post-Civil War industrial age and before automobiles, vacationers traveled by large lake excursion boats from Buffalo, Cleveland, Chicago and Detroit to the cooler climes of Mackinac Island. To accommodate overnight guests boat and railroad companies built summer hotels, such as the Grand Hotel, the grand dame of the island.

Day 2

The Henry Ford Museum houses an unrivaled display of Americana. Named for the man who literally built Detroit, the Museum abounds with remants of his legacy.

Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland is the world’s largest Christmas store. Wally Bronner founded it in 1945. The store boasts gifts and decorations of all kinds with “Merry Christmas” ornaments in more than 70 languages and over 200 styles of nutcrackers.
