The Grand Illumination tradition, that takes visitor’s breath away, began in 1935 when a single candle was lit in a window of each of the homes and shops throughout the historic area. Now, as it marks the beginning of the Christmas season in Williamsburg , the thousands of candles attract over 25,000 visitors a year.
Colonial Williamsburg is a picture of everyday life in the 18 th-century capital of Virginia . Its mile-long historic area is a living-history museum of exhibition buildings and period interpreters re-creating the spirit and culture of the Colonial City . In 1926, philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. embarked a massive project to preserve the historic buildings in Williamsburg . Costumed interpreters—tradesmen, housewives, and soldiers—all go about their 18 th century business.
The Berkeley Plantation is a Georgian Mansion furnished with a magnificent collection of 18 th-century antiques. It is the most historic plantation on the James River . In 1619, settlers observed the first Thanksgiving in America at Berkeley . It is the birthplace of Benjamin Harrison V, signer of the Declaration of Independence , and three times governor of Virginia . Also, “Taps” was composed at Berkeley when General George McClellan headquartered 140,000 Union troops there in 1862.
